Children with Disabilities Taken Good Care of in the Town of Kulim, Malaysia

The Kamakshi Child Development Centre has become synonymous with Kulim town in Northern Malaysia. It provides rehabilitation and learning programmes for children with disabilities.

Centre director Dr S Karnan said the facility cares for children with cerebral palsy, autism attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and Down syndrome. The centre, he explained serves as a referral  community based rehabilitation centre for surrounding government hospitals in North Malaysia. Its multiracial programmes were established in 2007 and the centre is accredited to the Health Ministry. The centre provides physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and educational assistance. It also has a toy library which is one of its kind in the country. It is used by hospitals or educational institutions to reached children with disabilities.

The Centre has just signed a memorandum of understanding with the Physiotherapy Department of AIMST University for joint sessions and referrals of cases. The centre received a cheque for RM30 000 ( 10 000 USD) from the Star Foundation,
