The Delhi High Court has issued crucial directives to the Delhi government’s Directorate of Education (DoE), emphasizing the need for the seamless operation and maintenance of seven special schools and three hostels catering to children with vision disabilities in the capital.

The court’s orders mandate the DoE to extend hostel facilities to all students enrolled in these special schools, ensuring timely provision of quality food, uniforms, clothing, recreational amenities, and other essentials for their daily needs. Furthermore, the DoE is instructed to appoint a superintendent for each hostel within eight weeks, in addition to hiring regular cooks, sanitation staff, caretakers, and security guards.

The court underscores the importance of continuing to operate and maintain these seven schools as specialized institutions in accordance with Section 31 of the Right of Persons with Disabilities Act [RPwD], 2016. The directives emanate from a petition filed by the National Federation of the Blind, a non-governmental organization.

These directives from the Delhi High Court aim to guarantee that children with vision disabilities in the capital receive optimal education and care. By implementing these orders, the court seeks to ensure that these students have unfettered access to facilities and resources essential for their academic success and overall well-being.

The onus is now on the Delhi government’s Directorate of Education to promptly implement the court’s directives, ensuring the efficient and effective operation of special schools and hostels dedicated to children with vision disabilities.
