A 2018 Egyptian law has been amended to impose harsher penalties to those who bully people with disabilities, reported Cairo Scene.

The new amendment will see those found guilty of harassing a person imprisoned for one year and fined EGP 50,000 to EGP 100,000.

If the crime is committed by a relative or someone in a position of power, the penalty increases to imprisonment of two years and a fine ranging from EGP 100,000 to EGP 200,000.

The revision was drafted by MP Mohamed El-Sallab, and provisionally approved by the House of Representatives on October 4th.
