Paige Greco

Australia’s Paige Greco has become the first gold medallist of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics after winning the women’s C1-3 3,000m individual pursuit event with a world-record breaking performance at Izu Velodrome.

The 24-year-old lead for the whole race against her Chinese rival WANG Xiaomei to claim gold in a world record time of 3:50.815 – breaking her previous world record by two seconds.

“It means so much,” Greco said of her gold medal.

“When I think about all the people that helped me get here, the staff and all my friends and family, it’s amazing. I owe it all to them.

“It feels amazing. I still can’t believe it. I keep looking down and seeing (the gold medal). It’s not really sunk in yet.”
