The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) revealed that 72 cases of violations related to people with disabilities were lodged at the commission.
According to the commission, the violations include abuse and negligence from family and requests to take persons with disabilities into state care, and complaints on the misuse of disability allowance.
Moreover, the HRCM added that cases of neglect by the state, and cases related to the death of people with disabilities under state care were reported.
In a statement released on December 3, HRCM emphasised the necessity of protecting the rights of people with disabilities, increase their participation in decision making, and establishing a system to facilitate easy access to public services and public places.
The Commision urged the state to ensure accessibility in travel and transport services and information and the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the planning and development of infrastructure in the cities and rural islands, which will support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.
