The eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality in Durban has set aside Disability Awareness Month, commemorated from 3 November to 3 December, to promote disability awareness.

“November is celebrated globally as disability month. The international theme proclaimed by the United Nations for this year is: “Removing barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all,” according to the South African government website.

The month-long campaign carries weekly sub-themes reflected in the Medium Term Strategic Framework (2019-2024) of government.

These include themes such as ‘a built environment accessible to all persons with disabilities’ and ‘persons with disabilities as equal players in building inclusive economies.’

There is also a theme structured around empowering children with disabilities.

In South Africa, 3 December is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and is also commemorated as National Disability Rights Awareness Day.
