Exhibition opens for local artists with disabilities

Young women waching arts at the exhibition

Latrobe City Council is establishing an annual community art exhibition to showcase the work of emerging local artists with disabilities. The Art for All Exhibition (Exhibition) will celebrate the diverse talents and achievements of people with disability and promote inclusion.

The Exhibition will be displayed at the Gippsland Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) from 6 December 2024 to 2 March 2025, as part of Latrobe Regional Gallery’s seasonal programming. It will also form part of Council’s celebration of International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD), held on 3 December each year.

Mayor of Latrobe City Council, Councillor Darren Howe, said that Latrobe City recognises the importance of celebrating art and culture as it enriches lives and encourages social inclusion.

“Art provides a way for individuals to express themselves freely and connect with the community in a meaningful way. This Exhibition in particular, provides a special opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the creative impact artists with disability make to the cultural landscape of Latrobe City.”

“A key focus in our Living Well Latrobe Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan and our Disability Access and Inclusion Plan is to provide all individuals with access to tools and resources that will improve their health and wellbeing. This Exhibition highlights Council’s commitment to social inclusion and working with our Creative Venues to ensure everyone in the community can actively participate in their hobbies and interests, without any barriers,” said the Mayor.

Artists with disability in Latrobe City interested in submitting their artwork for consideration must complete an Expression of Interest (EOI) form by Friday 25 October 2024.

An artist can submit only one artwork item to be considered, and it must be their original work. Accepted artworks include 2-dimensional pieces, such as drawings, paintings, photography, screen prints and poetry, as well as sculptural objects like ceramics, glass or mixed media designs.

The EOI form can be completed online at www.latroberegionalgallery.com/art-for-all-exhibition.
