UNITED NATIONS TREATIES
Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities – The UNCRPD is a comprehensive international human rights treaty that is intended to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. It has been ratified to date by 177 countries. Article 9 of the CRPD titled ‘Accessibility’ recognizes the rights of people with disabilities to full participation, including access to information and communications, including information and communities, technologies and systems. WIPO – The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a United Nations Agency adopted a landmark treaty in June 2013 to advance the right to read for people who are blind or otherwise print-disabled. The treaty which is officially known as the ‘Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons who are Blind, Visually Impaired, or otherwise Print Disabled’eliminated copyright barriers for those who need alternative accessible formats to standard print published information.
