Better amenity, better accessibility, better bus stops

The Tasmanian Government is upgrading bus stops along major highways to improve accessibility and comfort for passengers.

These works form part of the Government’s Bus Stop Upgrade Program, which is delivering all-access, all-weather bus stops at priority locations across the state, including the Brooker, Midland, Huon, South Arm and Lyell highways.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said the upgrades would make bus stops safer, more accessible and more comfortable for passengers.

“Sites have been chosen based on community feedback, usage and location,” Minister Vincent said.

“The latest package of upgrades has now been completed on the South Arm Highway at Lauderdale and on the Lyell Highway at Tynwald Park.

“These feature a combination of concrete waiting areas, shelters, upgraded footpaths, kerb and drainage improvements, and textured ground markers to assist people with vision impairment.”

These new facilities complement upgrades already completed at Bagdad on the Midland Highway and near MyState Bank Arena on the Brooker Highway.

Minister Vincent said the next round of works will begin in November, with 15 bus stops to be upgraded along the Huon Highway from Huonville to Dover.

“In addition to this program we are also continuing to improve access to public transport by upgrading high-use bus stops in the Kingborough area through the Kingston Congestion Package,” he said.

“89 bus stops in the area will be brought up to Disability Discrimination Act 1992standards. Many have already been upgraded, with more to begin construction in January.

“We’re also supporting Tasmanians through our continuation of half-priced bus fares, ensuring public transport is as accessible as ever under this Liberal Government.”
