The Bombay High Court has issued a directive to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to consider implementing measures to enhance the accessibility of currency for people with vision disabilities.

The Court has granted the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) an extension to review the recommendations put forth by an expert committee appointed by the Delhi High Court. These suggestions aim to enhance the accessibility of currency notes and coins for the visually impaired, such as incorporating tactile markings through the use of plastic.

The matter was brought before a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Arif Doctor, in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the National Association of the Blind (NAB). The PIL asserted that the recently introduced currency notes and coins presented challenges for individuals with visual impairments in identifying and distinguishing them.

During the court proceedings, senior advocate Venkatesh Dhond, representing the RBI, informed the bench that they had received the expert committee’s report and requested additional time to carefully consider the recommendations.
