In Spain, cases of sexual violence rise in families of young women with disabilities during pandemic

Stop sexual violence against women, woman hand

The Councilor for Feminisms and LGTBIQ +, Lorena Garrón, has held a working meeting with representatives of the Agadi, Fegadi, ONCE, Albor, Equa, and Autismo Cádiz to address proposals for improvement in the care offered from municipal services to women with disabilities during pandemic.

“We want all women to be able to attend and freely participate in the society, possibilities, and resources that the city has without being limited by any obstacle, be it emotional, functional, or physical,” explained Lorena Garrón.

The councilor has announced that they are studying “the access that people with disabilities have to the resources offered by the Foundation and what are the impediments that they find.”

“We are going to collaborate with these entities to make the Foundation’s website and its documentation more accessible and thus ensure that all women in the city have the means at their disposal to be able to report without any obstacle.”

Garrón explained that “information, training, and prevention are fundamental issues in the day to day in which it is necessary to continue working.” In this sense, she affirmed that “in recent times, an increase in cases of sexual violence has been detected within the families of young women with disabilities, which they are often unable to recognize themselves.”

The councilor described the meeting as “very productive” and said that gender issues would be incorporated across the board of people with disabilities formed by the City Council’s social services “to continue all this work”.
