Student makes clear face masks for people with hearing disabilities

Eric Kim

A high school student makes clear masks to help people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Eric Kim, a junior from Sunset High School in Portland Oregon, where he learned ASL (American Sign Language) and volunteered for people who are deaf and hard of hearing community, such as Tucker Maxon Elementary school, and senior assisted living centers.

From these interactions, I’ve learned how important seeing facial expression and lip movement when they communicate with each other.

Kim would hear about Ashley Lawrence,  a Kentucky college student making clear masks for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and was inspired to lend his support to the cause.

Due to the Coronavirus, people who are deaf and hard of hearing must wear masks, but also need to see lip movements to communicate effectively, which makes the need for these transparent masks more urgent in these times.

Kim currently has a GoFundMe page where people can donate to help in his creation of the masks.
