Indian Railways launches AI-powered sign language announcement system

AI-powered sign language train information system at Badshahnagar railway station.

Indian Railway has launched AI-powered sign language train information system for travelers with hearing disabilities at Badshahnagar railway station.

The system is designed to provide accessible information for travelers with hearing disabilities, installed on Platform 1 of the station, converts existing public announcements into sign language and displays them on LED screens in real time.

This new AI-driven technology bridges that communication gap by tapping directly into the station’s live public address audio system. It instantly captures spoken announcements in English and Hindi and the system translates the information into Indian Sign Language. The output is instantly broadcast as high-definition digital animations via expressive avatar gestures on LED display monitors installed the main passenger platforms.

“The technology automatically converts existing public announcements into sign language, allowing passengers with disabilities to access travel information independently without relying on third-party assistance,” said Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Gaurav Agarwal.

“A successful trial of the system was conducted in the presence of representatives of a Noida based organisation working for people who are deaf and hard of heating, and four certified sign language interpreters,” he added.

The system was developed by the division’s Signal and Telecommunication Department, spearheaded by Senior Divisional Signal and Telecommunication Engineer Vaibhav Shrivastava, in collaborative partnership with private tech firm Techtron Infotech Pvt. Ltd.
