Malaysia to introduce accreditation for sign language trainers

The Human Resources Ministry will develop a Training of Trainers (ToT) accreditation for sign language interpreters, says minster Steven Sim.

Sim said the move aims to empower persons with disabilities and address the lack of recognition and opportunities for sign language trainers. “There’s still low workplace awareness about the deaf community, and currently, no accreditation exists for sign language trainers,” he said.

He added that this initiative may serve as a model for similar programs for other disability groups, such as people with vision disabilities. “Our focus on welfare, skills, and achievement applies to everyone, regardless of physical ability,” he said.

The announcement came during the soft launch of the Labour Day Carnival, where three interpreters translated the national anthem. The event, running from April 28 to May 1 at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, will include a career fair, exhibitions, and new policy announcements by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
