The Commission plays a critical role in protecting older people and adults with disability from abuse, neglect, and exploitation across the state.

Mr Smith will commence in the role on 21 April, bringing extensive experience in executive and governance positions, and a strong background in disability advocacy, social justice, community legal services, and environmental law advocacy.

Most recently, Mr Smith held the role of Chief Executive Officer of Disability Advocacy Network Australia, the peak body for independent advocates in Australia. Prior to this, he served as CEO of the Environmental Defenders Office NSW for 14 years and later led People with Disability Australia.

Mr Smith succeeds the inaugural NSW Ageing and Disability Commissioner, Robert Fitzgerald AM, and Kathryn McKenzie who has been Acting Commissioner since April 2024.

Minister for Disability Inclusion, Kate Washington said:  “I am delighted to welcome Mr Smith to the role of NSW Ageing and Disability Commissioner.

“With his lived experience and extensive professional background in disability and social justice, Mr Smith brings a wealth of knowledge and a compelling perspective to the role of Commissioner.

“I look forward to working with him to further strengthen the rights and agency of adults with disability and older people, ensuring they can live free from abuse across the state.”

Minister for Seniors, Jodie Harrison said:  “Mr Smith’s appointment is an important step in strengthening protections for older people and adults with disability.

“His leadership and experience in the sector will ensure the Commission continues its vital work raising awareness, providing support, and preventing abuse.

“I also want to thank Kathryn McKenzie for her dedication and service while acting in the role.”

Incoming NSW Ageing and Disability Commissioner, Mr Jeff Smith said: “As a person with a disability with extensive professional experience in social justice, I have admired the extraordinary track record the NSW Ageing and Disability Commission has established in adult safeguarding in NSW.

“I look forward to building on the Commission’s legacy and helping older people and people with disability live safer and better lives.”
