
Matthew Cabraja, from Brampton, Ontario, Canada already achieved one goal of his – qualifying for the Tokyo Paralympics – now he looks to swim toward a medal.
As reported by the Brampton Guardian, the 19-year-old swims out of Brampton’s COBRA Swim Club and is one of the 128 athletes representing Canada in the 2020 Paralympics, which runs from August 24 to September 5.
Cabraja, a University of Toronto student, is competing at the Paralympics for the first time. He has a vision disability and is classified as a S11 para-swimmer. The swimming competitions commence on August 25.
Experiencing great success in recent years secured Cabraja’s spot on the Canadian Paralympic swimming team. He set personal best times in the 100-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley at the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships and also won five medals – four gold and one silver at the 2019 provincial championships and two multi-class medals, silver and bronze, at the Canadian Swimming Trials.
Cabraja was presented the Ken Giles award by the City of Brampton; an award given to the city’s top athlete of the year.
