Online maps help find accessible parking

Residents and visitors to Corangamite Shire have a new tool to find accessible car parks.

Chair of the newly formed Positive Ageing, Accessibility and Inclusion Reference Group, Tandarook Ward Councillor Jo Beard said Council has developed new maps showing the accessible parking spaces in the Shire towns.

“Council’s Assets Team sourced aerial photos that pinpointed the carparks and the Communications Team converted them to easy-to read artwork that is now available on the Council website.

“There is also a QR code on each map so can add the sites directly into Google Maps on your phone for ready access when you need it.

“The Access and Inclusion Team are circulating it to disability/accessibility service organisations and tourism bodies.”

“Along with our Works and Services Team, who put in the ramps, signs and line markings, it has been a whole-organisation collaboration to ensure people with mobility issues can access facilities for their various tasks and activities.

“With these maps in their pocket, our community members, and visitors, can plan ahead and make getting around easier from a time, effort and safety perspective.

“Thanks must go to the community members who gave input on the preferred locations of accessible parking during the various town streetscape consultations over recent years.

“Your experiences and insights really help council staff when it comes to planning and carrying out works that make our towns more liveable.

“I encourage everyone to have your say whenever Council asks for community input.

“Your ideas all go into the mix and while things might not happen straight away, over time we get really good results.”
