The Tasmanian Liberal Government is working with people with disabilities, their families, carers, disability providers and the wider community, to build a more equitable, inclusive and accessible state for all Tasmanians.

Now that the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is at full rollout, a full review and rewrite of the Tasmanian Disability Services Act 2011 is required, to provide the opportunity to consider harmonising Tasmania’s legislative requirements and definitions with the NDIS.

The review of the Disability Services Act 2011 to consider how we can deliver better outcomes for people with disability through high quality and safe services and by supporting National and International commitments.

There have been significant changes in the delivery of specialist disability services over the last ten years that we know must be addressed in the review, which will align our approach to restrictive practice to national best practice.

Under the NDIS, funding is now delivered as individual funding that provides people with choice and control of the support and care they need to help achieve their goals and aspirations, and the lived experience of people with disability, their families and carers will be fundamental to our approach to the review and that consultation will be accessible, inclusive and safe.

Consultation will include consideration of the need for, and support for establishing a disability commissioner.

The review will commence early in 2021.
