New Social Justice Charter highlights inequalities and works to eradicate them

colorful hands shape

Protecting the human rights of every person living in our vibrant and diverse municipality is a top priority at Yarra. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, fairness and respect.

Yarra’s new Social Justice Charter highlights the barriers many members of our community still face due to age, gender, sex, sexuality, income, education, cultural background, language skills, religion or disability.

This document outlines our obligations to the Yarra community and provides a framework to help us make sure our decisions, plans and policies are just and equitable. Ultimately, we want to eradicate the barriers the marginalised members of our community face.

Social Justice is the shared responsibility of everyone in the City of Yarra.

While we were developing this Social Justice Charter, we asked the community to tell us what social justice means to them and how we should incorporate these principles in guiding our decisions and policy making.

You told us that the four key principles that should guide our charter should be:

  • Access –  making sure our services, facilities, and programs are accessible and can be used by everyone.
  • Equity – ensuring everyone is treated equally and has access to the same resources.
  • Rights –  protecting our community’s human rights.
  • Participation –making sure everyone’s voice is heard.

We hope you’ll help us reach this end goal of a Yarra that is socially inclusive, fair and just.
