Persons with disabilities have demanded to include a person with a disability in the COVID -19 task force, highlighting that there is a need for someone who understands their needs better.
“There was a need to include a person with a disability in the COVID-19 task force, who understand the needs and languages of persons with disabilities,” said Association of the deaf Zimbabwe (Assod) Coordinator, Daniel Masotsha.
“Healthy workers if assigned for a door to door visits, they should be accompanied by sign language interpreters so to avoid unconvincing the deaf community there are the ones who understand the needs and communicate with them.”
Masotsha said the lockdown was the right measure to combat the spread of Covid-19, but the measures were put without considering prepared persons with disabilities financially and food-wise, Byo24News reports.
“No mitigation measures were put down to assist the less fortunate whose livelihood was supported by the streets. No equal access to protective cloth to persons with disabilities, for example, no masks, gloves, and so on, the challenges are there as to persons with disabilities,” said Masotsha.
