Down Madrid releases digital version of children story

The Down Syndrome Foundation of Madrid (Down Madrid) has published the digital version of ‘Sofía y el bizcocho’ , a children’s story of its ‘Cuentigo’ project to bring reading to children with disabilities.

As the Foundation reports, “the ‘Cuentigo’ are a series of stories written by people with intellectual disabilities that we have adapted using pictograms so that they can be read by the little ones. Now that we spend more time at home and without school, we want to expand the reach of the ‘Cuentigo’ so that you can enjoy it online.”

The studies indicate that between 60% and 80% of this group shows a significant degree of immaturity in language and difficulties in acquiring reading skills. In this way they are excluded from access to information, culture and literature.

The project, launched in 2012 with the support of the ACS Foundation and INNOCEAN, arose from this need to promote the habit of reading . Throughout the nine years of the initiative, people with intellectual disabilities have written and adapted up to 90 stories with pictograms, the copies of which have been distributed free of charge to people in the group, educational centers and various patient associations. And now, the pandemic has encouraged the Foundation to upload the different ‘Cuentigo’ for download on its website.
