Malta ratified the CRPD on 10 October 2012. The KummissjoniNazzionaliPursuniB’Dizabilita (KNPD) or National Commission Persons with Disability is a governmental department forming part of the Ministry for the Family and Social Solidarity. It is responsible for promoting the Equal Opportunities Act raising awareness of difficulties facing people with disabilities and combating prejudice. The KNPD supports people with disabilities in Malta through various initiatives and services. A fully comprehensive guide to all the organisations, facilities, help, benefits and initiatives for disabled people living in Malta is available on the KNPD website.

Legal framework and policies:
The Equal Opportunities Act was adopted on 19 January 2000. It prohibits discrimination on the grounds of disability in employment, education, access to public facilities, and in the provision of goods, services, and facilities. Disability discrimination is defined as unfavourable treatment because of a person’s disability, because of non-compliance with a requirement or condition which is unreasonable in the circumstances of the case, or because of a person’s use of auxiliary aids or assistance.
