Macedonia ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on 29 December 2011.

On 8th April the Macedonian parliament adopted a Law on Prevention and Protection against Discrimination. The law prohibits any discrimination based on race, origin, nationality or ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, political beliefs, or any other grounds.

Most public buildings remain inaccessible and inconsistent inspection has resulted in construction of new facilities that are not accessible for persons with disabilities. There is no disability awareness component incorporated in the training of planners, architects and construction engineers. Macedonian law only requires that new buildings be made accessible to persons with disabilities.

Transport

Public transportation for persons with disabilities is very limited. Disabled travel in the country is challenging. Pavements are uneven and often completely blocked by parked cars. Wheelchair accessibility is poor even in the capital, Skopje.

Most big shopping malls, museums and government buildings have wheelchair ramps. Some buses in Skopje operate wheelchair lifts but such buses are not available in other towns around the country. The Holiday Inn and Aleksandar Palace in Skopje and the Ramada Plaza outside Gevgelija offer rooms equipped for wheelchair accessibility.

For people with vision disabilities most of the traffic lights are accompanied by a fast beep for red and slower beeps for green.
