Disability Legislations and Policies
Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) – Ratified on June 7, 2017. It has signed but not ratified the Optional Protocol to the CRPD. Fiji’s CRPD State Party reports submitted to the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR).
Constitution of Republic of Fiji, 2013 – The Constitution which was signed into law on September 6, 2013outlines several rights for persons with disabilities.
Fiji National Council for Disabled Persons (FNCDP) Act 1994 – Implemented to provide for the establishment of a Fiji National Council for Disabled Persons.
National Policy on Persons Living with Disabilities (2008-2018) – The National Policy together with an action plan provides a framework for all government and non-government agencies, organizations and individuals, families throughout the Fiji islands.
Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill 2016 – The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill has been drafted to make provisions for the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities in accordance with the UNCRPD.
Travel Related Information
Persons with disabilities may find it difficult to travel in Fiji due to inaccessible infrastructure. Even though building regulations require new public buildings to be accessible to persons with disabilities, only a few existing buildings meet this requirement.
