Detectives have charged a disability carer following an investigation into the alleged sexual abuse of a teenage boy in the state’s Illawarra region.

In February this year, detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation following reports a teenage boy had been sexually abused by a man while in his care.

Following extensive investigations, detectives arrested a 39-year-old man at Nowra Police Station about 1.40pm yesterday (Wednesday 1 April 2020).

The man was charged with aggravated sexual intercourse (child between 10 and 14 years) and common assault.

Police will allege the man, who is a disability carer, sexually abused the boy – then aged 12 – while in his care at a respite home near Shoalhaven Heads in February 2020.

The man was refused bail and is due to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Thursday 2 April 2020).

The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.
