Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, has officially become the first city from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to join the European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT).

The membership marks a pivotal shift in the region’s approach to inclusive urban design and travel. For years, the city has invested heavily in infrastructure aimed at removing barriers for travelers with disabilities.

More than 43,000 residents with disabilities in Astana, a figure that has influenced how public infrustruture, transportion and tourism facilities are planned and upgraded. Urban accessibility has therefore become a fundamental element of development strategy, ensuring that growth benefits the entire population while enhancing the city’s attractiveness to international visitors.

Joining ENAT is not merely a symbolic gesture; it provides Astana with a collaborative platform to align its city planning with internationally recognized accessibility standards. This includes the implementation of Universal Design principles across public places, transport, hotels, and major cultural attractions.
