Brimbank’s draft Disability Action Plan 2022-2026 is open for public consultation to help guide Council’s priorities in supporting people with disabilities to live connected, inclusive lives.

The aim of the Action Plan is to reduce barriers for people with a disability in accessing goods, services and facilities, and drive change in attitudes and practices where needed.

Priority areas include:

  • improving communication and access to information
  • developing employment, education and volunteering opportunities
  • advocating for improved access to health and wellbeing services and support
  • improving accessibility to the built environment.

The draft Plan was developed after conversations with people with disability, carers, disability support organisations, government departments, and Council staff.

Public consultation on the Draft Plan is open until 23 August 2022 at https://yoursay.brimbank.vic.gov.au/DAP

Feedback received from consultation will help shape the final draft Plan to be presented at a future Council meeting to be considered for adoption.

Brimbank Mayor Cr Jasmine Nguyen said: “Local government plays an important role in making things fairer for people with disability by changing attitudes and practices that might create barriers to inclusion and participation.

People with disability generally have lower levels of health and wellbeing and this has only been made worse by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Council wants to drive tangible and meaningful change with a solid plan for action and we are seeking the public’s feedback.”
