Tunisian fashion show highlights the concept that beauty comes in all forms

model with disability walking on red carpet

In Tunis, Tunisia, a fashion show featuring 12 models with disabilities aimed to challenge the norms of what is considered beauty.

Amal Mahfouth, member of Rotaract Club Tanit Carthage, said: “RAC Mahlak is an event for women with cancer, with a physical disability, or any woman who feels different but in fact she is not different. The event is a fashion show where we bring fashion designers and beauty specialists to dress and do makeup for them to go out on the red carpet in the presence of their families and the people they love.”

Among the models showcased was Khmiri Zakeya, 40 years old, who has been fighting societal attitudes since a 2009 accident that left her severely burned.

Zakeya said: “I was very happy with this event and the atmosphere is beautiful. All the people are happy. We want to show society that anyone who has an accident, no matter what the accident is, has the right to live, has the right to be integrated in society and is a human being like everyone else. There is no difference.”
