At its September Council meeting, the City of Canada Bay adopted its new Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2021–25, taking into consideration feedback from over 200 members of the local community.

“Our aim is to make the City of Canada Bay a better place for people living with disability to live, work, and visit,” City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.

“Our new Disability Inclusion Action Plan sets out actions that Council plans to take over the next four years to make this possible.

“This includes reaching out to our community to see how Council facilities, services, and programs can be more accessible and inclusive.”

Many community members said it was difficult for people with a disability to get around, and the City of Canada Bay has committed to a number of actions to improve accessibility within the area. This includes:

  • Planning for existing Council building and facilities to be made accessible
  • Reviewing disability parking spaces in town centres and providing additional spaces where necessary
  • Providing more accessible public toilets, and more.

In order to help make the City of Canada Bay more inclusive, Council has committed to over twenty further actions, including to:

  • Provide mandatory inclusion training to all Council staff
  • Work with the Access and Inclusion Committee to raise awareness of issues affecting people with a disability in the area
  • Deliver communications that promote inclusion and diversity of the community.
