A Los Angeles judge has cleared Britney Spears to choose her own lawyer in the long-drawn-out battle over her controversial conservatorship.

The ruling came on July 14 as Spears addressed a LA Los Angeles Superior Court for the second time in less than a month.

The pop star has chosen Mathew S. Rosengart, a prominent Hollywood lawyer and former federal prosecutor, to take up her case.

Britney Spears, who joined the hearing by phone, demanded once again that her father, Jamie Spears, be removed from the legal agreement that has controlled her affairs for years.

She said that the arrangement “is allowing my dad to ruin my life” and said she is scared of him.

“I’m here to get rid of my dad and charge him with conservatorship abuse,” she said.

“I’m here to press charges. I’m angry and I will go there,” Spears said,

Britney Spears’s supporters rallied outside the court, and also gathered in central Washington DC as the hearing was being held.

Britney Spears, 39, has been under the conservatorship since 2008, when concerns over her mental health prompted her father to petition the court for legal authority over his daughter’s life.

The Singer case has drawn attention from politicians Sen. Elizabeth Warren, to Sen. Ted Cruz, voicing their support for Britney Spears. Rep. Matt Gaetz was at the rally outside the court and spoke in front of #FreeBritney activists in support of the movement.
