Research indicates that persons with disabilities in Ghana could not access the various government relief packages during the coronavirus pandemic, the research conducted by the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFDO).

“Only 7 per cent of persons with disabilities were able to benefit from the government’s assistance programme, during the coronavirus pandemic.” said Christopher Agbega, COVID-19 Project Officer of GFDO.

He added a lack of information on the various assistance programmes and that their conditions were not taken into account to formulate COVID-19 response policies and programmes.

“The coronavirus had affected the business and socio-economic lives of persons with disabilities.” he said.

“The research shows that about 87 per cent of persons with disabilities have lost their businesses or jobs due to the pandemic’s outbreak.” said Agbega.

He stressed the need for all key stakeholders to involve persons with disabilities in all decisions, which affected them to make meaningful contributions to ensure successful implementation and positive impact.
