Logan City Council today gave the green light to a new action plan to create a city that continues to be inclusive, accessible and welcoming for people of all abilities.
The Disability Action Plan 2023-2025 was endorsed at the ordinary Council meeting.
It will build on Council’s previous two plans to better support people with disability through improving access to spaces and services.
More than 22,000 people in the City of Logan need daily assistance with core activities due to a severe or profound disability and more than 31,000 people provide unpaid help to someone with disability, Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows.
City Lifestyle Chair Councillor Laurie Koranski said Council had drafted the new plan over the past six months, incorporating feedback from the community and local stakeholders.
The plan aims to ensure access and inclusion is considered as part of Council’s core business and meets the requirements of state and federal legislation.
Cr Koranski said the 2023-2025 plan demonstrates Council’s commitment to creating a city that is inclusive, accessible and welcoming for everyone.
“We made significant inroads with the previous action plan achieving 83 out of the planned 84 actions, as well as an additional 11 actions, over the past four years,” Cr Koranski said.
“Council now looks forward to further building on these achievements and taking on board the community feedback we have received on the new plan.
“We will be working hard over the next four years to deliver the actions outlined in the plan and harness new opportunities.”
Actions to be completed include:
- Partnering with disability providers to promote career opportunities at Council
- Tailoring grant writing information sessions and workshops to support people with disability
- Making braille stickers for wheelie bins available to the community
- Reviewing, developing and promoting the range of accessible disaster management resources available to the community
- Scheduling low sensory shopping experiences at Logan Recycling Market with reduced crowds and noise
