New fines for drivers who park in disability parking spaces

Parking spot for disabled people

Logan City Council has given the green light to increase the penalty for drivers who park in disability parking spaces without the required permit.

Council amended its local laws to increase the fine from $266 (two penalty units) to $533 (four penalty units) in line with changes to State legislation.

The new fine will come into effect once the amendment is gazetted by the State Government later this year.

Council received a final report into the amendment of Local Law No. 7 (Parking) 2003 after the community consultation period ended on October 23.

No submissions were received from the community and no State agency identified any adverse interest in the proposed local law amendment.

Council is committed to enforcing the appropriate use of disability parking spaces under the Access and Inclusion Plan 2019-2022.

City Lifestyle Committee Chairperson Councillor Laurie Koranski said Council’s parking officers monitor disability parking bays on roads, on Council property and at some large shopping centres.

“We encourage motorists to ensure they are parking correctly and leave disability parking bays for those who need them and are authorised to use them,” Cr Koranski said.

Queensland Police may also issue fines to people who park in disability parking bays without a permit.
