The skills, achievements and contributions of people with disability will be celebrated with the 2020 Blacktown City Disability Awards and Talent Showcase.

The event marks the International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) for 2020, an annual United Nations-sanctioned event that aims to promote an understanding of people with a disability and to encourage support for their dignity, rights and wellbeing.

The theme this year is ‘Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 world’.

Blacktown City Mayor, Tony Bleasdale OAM, said the Disability Awards and Talent Showcase are an opportunity to celebrate all abilities and the diversity of the Blacktown community.

“It makes me so proud to be Mayor of a City that is so committed to celebrating, supporting, and recognising people of all cultures and abilities,” Mayor Bleasdale said.

“The talent showcase will have wonderful performances from people with a disability and the awards will recognise the achievements of individuals, groups and organisations within Blacktown City,” Mayor Bleasdale said.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event will be held online, with the awards to be followed by the talent showcase.

The Blacktown City Disability Awards provides an opportunity to acknowledge the many contributions made in 2020 by people with disability, advocates, and services/businesses in the community.

As part of the Blacktown City Talent Showcase, local performers were asked to submit a 5-minute video of themselves singing or dancing, reciting poetry, or giving a speech.

5 performances have been selected to be shown live at the event, while the remaining performances will be available to view online.

Those wishing to watch the talent showcase and awards will be able to connect and view the event online.
