Charity extends project to provide DAB/FM radios for blind people

UK’s blind charity has helped more than 600 people who are blind or have low vision to maintain their independence and fight isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF) will extend its innovative BWBFConnect service for several more months to provide ongoing support for those who are continuing to shield at home for age or health reasons.

BWBF provides specially adapted audio equipment such as DAB/FM radios free of charge to those with sight loss.

To date, more than 600 free radios have been issued under the BWBF Connect scheme. The devices deliver news and information, along with entertainment along with a friendly voice and companionship.

“Having never attempted anything of this scale before, we were naturally unsure about whether a socially-distanced installation and support service would be possible, but we have been completely overwhelmed by the success of the scheme,” said Sophie Wheldon, BWBF Regional Development Manager.

BWBFConnect enables a person with vision disabilities to receive one of our specially adapted devices via a doorstep delivery. The recipient will then receive a phone call from a member of BWBF’s team who will talk them through the setup and answer any questions they may have, ensuring that they get full use of the equipment.

Recipients who meet the charity’s eligibility criteria can choose from a range of devices.
