Russia: COVID-19 recommendations for people with chronic diseases

Patients with chronic diseases that weaken the immune system are at risk for coronavirus infection. They are also more likely to develop complications from COVID-19. That is why such patients need to follow additional precautions and know what difficulties a coronavirus infection threatens, depending on a particular chronic disease.

 Despite the removal of the self-isolation regime in several regions, the risk of infection with COVID-19 is still significant. This is evidenced by the preservation of the mask regime in Russia’s subjects, warns Sergey Shkitin, candidate of medical sciences, and expert of the All-Russian Union of Insurers. The number of newly detected new cases of COVID-19 infection remains significant. It should be remembered that chronic patients should not forget about the planned treatment of their chronic diseases. In case of problems with obtaining specialized medical care, you should contact your insurance medical organization, where they are obliged to help the patient.

General recommendations

  • Use protective masks and gloves when leaving the house and possible contact with people;
  • Avoid mass crowds;
  • Use separate dishes and avoid eating food outdoors;
  • Leave outer clothing and shoes in the hallway. Disinfect things brought from the street;
  • Conduct daily wet cleaning, ventilate the room;
  • If people with symptoms of SARS live in the house, you need to minimize contacts, ventilate the room 2 to 3 times a day;
  • Observe the frequency of medical supervision at the attending physician and follow his/her recommendations

Risk Groups Recommendations

For patients with chronic diseases of the cardiovascular system:

  • conduct regular gymnastics classes;
  • control blood pressure and pulse 2-4 times a day.

For patients with chronic diseases of the respiratory system:

  • exclude contact with pets;
  • avoid the use of pungent disinfectants.

For patients with chronic diseases of the endocrine system:

  • monitor blood sugar levels at intervals recommended by your doctor.

For patients with cancer:

  • adherence to the terms of planned hospitalizations.
  • take antiretroviral drugs prescribed by your doctor for HIV infection.
  • ensure proper patient care;
  • Do gymnastics for bedridden patients, prescribed by your doctor.
