In the Khabarovsk Territory, the implementation of the project “We Can Live by Ourselves” begins, within the framework of which people with intellectual disabilities will be prepared for independent living. The works will be carried out not only with people with intellectual disabilities but also with their parents.
During the implementation of the project “We Can Live by Ourselves”, specialists will build independent living skills in people with autism and intellectual disabilities. In the training apartment, they will learn to properly conduct hygiene procedures, clean the house, take care of things, make purchases, cook food.
“Now we buy equipment, furniture, and select personnel who will work with our wards and their parents. According to the plan, we should open a training apartment in which the children will learn independent living skills in May. If the sanitary and epidemiological situation allows, then the adaptation program will begin at this time,” said Natalya Evteeva, the head of the Khabarovsk organization Real Aid.
Specialists will work not only with children but also with their parents. Psychologists will teach them to support the independent actions of growing children and will also help them overcome fears associated with the fact that their child will someday be left without parental care.
The project plans to involve at least 50 families of people with mental disabilities, as well as more than 100 specialists – educators, teachers, and psychologists. Subsequently, the tested adaptation program is planned to be used in organizations of the social sphere of the Khabarovsk Territory and educational institutions.
