The Confederation of People with Physical and Organic Disabilities of the Valencian Community, COCEMFE CV, has warned of the consequences of the digital divide in the group of people with disabilities, especially in the elderly and school age persons.
This has been warned by the entity in a statement after conducting its Autonomous Council online this Wednesday, which monitors the needs of the community in the face of the situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The entity of public utility has explained that reduced mobility, the situation of dependency, advanced age or poverty are factors that hinder access to technological devices such as computers or tablets or internet services and, therefore, contribute to the exclusion.
The consequences of the digital divide in the face of the pandemic are the difficulty of accessing accessible information that is useful for the community, to services such as the purchase of products online, to telecommute or to monitor classes in the field of education.
Juan Mondéjar, president of the entity, has pointed out that the digital divide “leads to poverty and exclusion.”
“The lack of access to both technological devices and accessible information or even the internet leads to the social exclusion of people with disabilities and is directly related to poverty,” said Juan Mondéjar.
