Sara Anaya, Asindown Vocational Training Teacher writes that in spite of the great advances achieved, women with Down syndrome and intellectual disability have a higher risk of suffering from the so-called double discrimination or vulnerability, reports Levente, the first being a woman and a second, because of their intellectual disability; circumstance that supposes a violation of the human rights that must be guaranteed to every person, regardless of their circumstances.
This situation often goes unnoticed, thus presenting more possibilities of suffering unwanted situations, difficulties in accessing specialized resources that have a gender perspective, greater limitations for social interaction, training, access to the labor market, emancipate, etc.
When we refer to the group of women with disabilities, specifically people with intellectual disabilities and Down Syndrome, it is necessary the daily effort to tear down cliches, barriers and preconceived ideas and show society what they are able to achieve with a little more of help For this, it is necessary that the people around her know how to listen to her, have patience, offer her help in the face of the “challenges” that cost her the most, and above all, give way to her dreams and goals.
Asindown has been advocating the elimination of prejudices, stereotypes and preconceived ideas that distort the social image and normalized perception of Down syndrome individuals for thirty years.
